Online Classes
SWEMS utilizes Google Classroom to manage online classes such as new member orientation, yearly required classes, and other sessions from time to time. You can take these classes from the comfort of your own home and work around your personal schedule. However, we ask that you please complete training quickly.
Note: If you do not complete required training within the time frame allotted, we may have to suspend your riding privileges. This is to ensure our agency maintains compliance with state training requirements.
In Person Drills
We also run in-person drills. Some of these drills are done with other neighboring agencies and others may be in person lectures.
Due to the pandemic and because many of our skills are hands on, we have started to split some drills to an online lecture coupled with an in-person component to practice the skills.
Driver Training
We have two in-house certified Emergency Vehicle Operator trainers and provide this training at our base. Emergency Vehicle Operation classes are taught when we have a minimum of three members who are eligible and interested in becoming an Emergency Vehicle Operator.
EMT Training
Becoming a certified NYS Emergency Medical Technician requires completion of a 145 hour class. Due to the complexity of this class, they are offered yearly. We partner with Aura Prep to host a class at our base.
If that class does not fit your schedule, we will work with you to sponsor you for an EMT class taught elsewhere.
Our policy is that we will sponsor you for the EMT class and there is no out of pocket cost unless you drop out of the class and the training organization charges us for tuition. If that happens, you will be responsible for the cost of reimbursement.
